THE CHAIR SPUN around . . . and sitting in it was a square-jawed, graying man with a very familiar-looking dent in his chin.
âHey, guys,â he said. His eyes narrowed when he smiled.
Imogen knew that smile. . . .
âItâs Don Vadrolga!â
The Crims were all very excited. Don Vadrolga was the star of many of their favorite movies, including Barry, a horror film about a psychic girl with a boyâs name, and Sunday Morning Temperature, a cult hit from the 1970s. Don was famous for being cool, for being an amazing dancer, and for having a slightly revolting ponytail. But the ponytail was gone. Imogen thought he looked pretty good, for an extremely famous person who has, until quite recently, been held hostage by an extremely famous crime family for an extremely long time.
âI know you danced with a princess once,â said Josephine, rubbing his arm. âI wonderâ Would you maybe dance with me later? Some say she and I have lots in common. Our clothes, mostly, because I stole all my formal gowns from her wardrobe.â
âI THOUGHT YOU WERE WONDERFUL IN THAT FILM WHERE YOUâRE A SPY AND YOU HAVE TO BE LOWERED FROM THE CEILING SO THAT THE SENSORS ON THE FLOOR DONâT SPOT YOU,â said Uncle Knuckles.
âThat wasnât me,â said Don Vadrolga. âThat was Tom Cruise.â
âWell, I loved you in Jerry Maguire,â said Freddie.
âAgain, a Tom Cruise film,â said Don Vadrolga.
âYou were fantastic in that movie with the talking baby!â said Uncle Clyde.
âThank you,â said Don Vadrolga, smiling his crinkly smile. âA film I actually appeared in.â
âIt was so cute the way you commented on everything that was going on, even though you were just a baby!â
Don Vadrolga stopped smiling. âThat wasnât me. I played the hero! The love interest! Are you seriously confusing me with a newborn baby who didnât even grow up to be a famous actor? Whatâs wrong with you?â
âI donât know,â said Ava, stepping forward, eyes furious. âWhatâs wrong with YOU?â
As soon as Don saw Ava, he stood up and started shaking. And not because he was doing a very familiar disco dance move. âNo!â he cried, clutching his chair, as if it could help him, which it couldnât. âNot her! She canât bring me back there!â
âWHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?â Ava shouted.
But Don Vadrolga didnât reply. Instead, he leaped out of his chair and ran out of the room. And he actually looked pretty cool doing it, too, because he was Don Vadrolga.
The Crims and Ava ran after Don Vadrolga, through the mansion, out of the back door, over the manicured lawn, past the hedges that had been topiaried to look like characters from Don Vadrolga movies, and back through the booby-trapped jungle. Panting and breathless, they somehow made it all the way to a clearing in the middle of the rain forest that they hadnât come across before. A private plane was waiting on the grassy runway. But it didnât wait very long, because Don Vadrolga was already running up the steps into the plane.
